Plant species photo plant species image, 300 px wide The name "Climacium dendroides" already gives one of the characteristics of this moss: It looks like a small tree: Below with a more or less unbranched trunk, above with branches. What is concealed is the lying rhizome. The "trees" of this moss can get rather high: The small wood on the picture consisted of about 5-7cm high specimens.

This trait is referred to by the scientific name Hamatocaulis, which derives from the Latin for 'hooked stalk'. Photo was taken in a springhead on Carn Ingli, Pembrokeshire, Wales in 2002.

  1. Nephroma arcticum
    1. Plant species photo plant species image, 300 px wide The foliose lichens form a broad, flat, leaf-like thallus. Some are found on dry rock surfaces, but more commonly they are found on the forest floor. On the underside of the thallus there are thread-like rhizines, made of tightly woven hyphae. They anchor the lichen, and can conduct water in capillary spaces between the fungal strands.
