| Explanation: These Digital Elevation Models (DEM) are part of the Hierarchic GIS for the ARctic System Science (ARCSS) Land-Atmosphere-Ice Interactions (LAII) Flux Study. The DEMs are viewed from the southwest. They portray a series of databases that hierarchically enclose (from top to bottom) 1x1-m permanent plots, 1x1-km research grids, larger regions at Toolik Lake and Imnavait Creek, the Upper Kuparuk River watershed and the entire Kuparuk River basin. | |

DEM Creation: the Kuparuk River area was created from four USGS 1:2,500,000-scale digital DEMs, with hydrology, roads and shorelines overlaid from the Digital Chart of the World (Environmental Systems Research Institute, ESRI). The Upper Kuparuk River Region was created from National Aeronautics and Space stereopair photographs. The hydrology and roads were scan-digitized. The Imnavait Creek study region and 1x1-km grid area DEMs were produced from digitized 1:6000-scale orthophoto contour maps that were produced by Airphoto Tech, Inc., Anchorage, AK. The Toolik Lake study region and 1x1-km grid area DEMs were produced from 1:500 and 1:5000-scale stereo aerial photographs. The 1x1-m areas were collected using vegetation point frames, the surface of the upper canopy of the vegetation is displayed. The final DEMs and 3-D views were prepared using the ARC/INFO TIN module. The poster was plotted on an ENCAD NovaJet III inkjet plotter run by IMAGEZ software from Onyx, Provo, UT. Map date: February 15, 1996. | |
